Cathedral House
Cathedral House
Cathedral House, at 48–52 Wyndham Street, is one of Auckland’s most significant heritage buildings and a rare example of early 20th-century commercial architecture. Built in the early 1900s for Collins Bros & Co., it was considered one of Auckland’s first “skyscrapers,” reflecting the city’s rapid commercial growth.
Designed in the Edwardian Free Classical style, the building features classical façades, pilasters, cornices, and a prominent pediment, while inside, original jarrah timber floors, exposed brickwork, and steel framework have been preserved. Its name comes from its prominent corner location opposite St Patrick’s Cathedral, placing it within a key civic and cultural precinct.
Over time, Cathedral House has transitioned from warehouse and factory use to a character-filled commercial office building. Recognised in Auckland’s Unitary Plan for its heritage value, it continues to offer a prestigious and distinctive address in the heart of the CBD, with sweeping views of the Harbour Bridge and surrounding city.
